Description

Purpose: The DEI Committee was created in 2020 to prioritize anti-racism and social justice in the strategic planning, priorities, and work of the SDBP and its members.

Goals:

  1. Develop annual training sessions (workshops, concurrent sessions) for competitive review on race and health for every SDBP annual meeting to enhance the knowledge, attitudes and skills of Society members in the areas of race, racism and health.
  2. Establish a presence in the SDBP newsletter by submitting articles, commentaries and other writings regarding the way racism impacts the development, behavior and health of children.
  3. Assist each SDBP Committee, Section and SIG in developing their own DEI goals and work.
  4. Design annual anti-racism trainings for all co-chairs and members of the board of directors to build the racial literacy of our leaders in the Society.
  5. Provide guidance to authors and researchers to consider evaluating racism as a Social Determinant of Health (SDoH) rather than race as a descriptive variable in their writings. Race is not biological; racism is a social determinant of health.
