Title: “Learning Disorders”

Learning Objectives:

  1. Cite the prevalence of academic learning problems and the most common comorbid conditions.
  2. Describe the differences between medical and educational diagnoses of academic learning problems.
  3. Recognize characteristics that predict future reading, writing, and mathematics abilities.
  4. Select appropriate diagnostic measures for identifying academic learning disorders.
  5. Assess appropriateness of interventions for academic learning disorders.

Sheryl Frierson, MD, M.Ed., FAAP has over 20 years of experience in teaching, research, clinical care, and advocacy promoting the well-being and academic thriving of children with learning disabilities and related disorders. She is the Medical Director of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia at Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas, Texas where she leads a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, diagnosticians, educators, a speech-language pathologist, and a licensed clinical social worker. The team provides diagnostic evaluations and supports the community through advocacy, educational outreach, and training public school educators to identify and teach students with dyslexia. Dr. Frierson is board-certified in General Pediatrics and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  She serves on the Executive Committee of the AAP Council on Children with Disabilities.
